The S612 needs the circuitry in the MD-280 interface (the entire system itself is virtually identical to the Nintendo Famicom disk system - even the drive controller plugs into the back of the S612 like a game cartridge. Up when they were in the $50 range a couple of years ago!Pretty much the same QD configuration between the S612 and the S700, except the S700 has all of the controller interface circuitry on board so you can pretty much plunk the Gotek drive in there. The 612 prices are going up in the market here in japan, I don't think the QD drive specs differ that much on the S 700Ĭompared to the S612. It took a while to get my head around it, but i was able to saveĪnd store samples onto a usb thumb drive. I had to solder the jumper wires as mentioned in the instructions, The gotek drive was around 1600yen, the firmware was free. I know that my Kurzweil K2000R can import samples from later Akai units, but I've had difficulty finding information about cross-compatibility for the older units. I've loaded and saved multiple times on the disks I have with no issue. After that I put the new belt on and everything is working just fine without any need for lubricants or any other adjustments-I did clean the head and around the spindle too. It took a lot of patience using a dozen cotton swabs and Isopropyl alcohol, but eventually I got it all cleaned up. The hardest part was cleaning off all the black residue left from the old belt it's sticky and hard to clean off. It is different than the one for the Famicom Disk System. Some of the solder pads had come off, so I had to use jumper wires.Īs far as the MD280 is concerned, I purchased a new belt from Console5: AKAI, Roland, Korg, Mitsumi 2.8" Quick Disk SQUARE floppy drive belt. I had to redo almost the entire Power Supply Unit for the S612, replacing all the electrolytic capacitors, the transistors, and the voltage regulators. I recently revived an Akai S612 and the MD280 QD drive. ![]()
